Your 3 day Camel-trekking & Camping Tour, “Dreaming of Dromedaries” starts from a desert hotel just north of Erg Chebbi. Spend all day camel-trekking deep into the big dunes & camp in total solitude surrounded by sand & sky.

The next morning, camel-trek out of the dunes to visit Berber nomads living on the hamada. Enjoy lunch & learn about their desert lifestyle. After lunch, camel-trek back into the dunes for a second night of desert camping.

On Day 3, you can watch the sunrise from the high dunes before camel-trekking out of the dunes. Shower, change & relax at the desert hotel. Your 3-day Camel-trekking & Camping Tour, “Dreaming of Dromedaries” ends with lunch at the hotel.

Day 1 :

MERZOUGA/ERG CHEBBI – CAMEL-TREKKING – DESERT CAMPING (BIG DUNES)

Your 3 day Camel-trekking & Camping Tour, “Dreaming of Dromedaries Tour” begins in the morning. You’ll start from a desert hotel at the quieter north end of Erg Chebbi in the Merzouga region of the Sahara Desert. Your camelman/guide will introduce you to your camels and get you mounted up. You’ll then camel-trek into the big dunes, leaving the sounds & sights of civilization behind. After2-3 hours of camel-trekking, surrounded by nothing but sand, sky, & silence, you’ll stop for lunch & a rest under the shade of a large tree amid the dunes. Your guide will teach you how to prepare Moroccan tea, as well as the rituals for serving it. He will also explain why the camels travel in such zig-zag paths through the dunes, and teach you about camels and how the nomads care for them. You may even get to learn how to bake bread in the sand – a nomad secret! In the afternoon, you’ll camel-trek for another couple of hours even deeper into the dunes, watching how the sands change colour as the sun travels across the sky. Although it may seem like the dunes are lifeless, this is not true. Many animals make their home there. If you’re lucky, you might get to see a desert fox with its huge pointy ears, well-suited to life in this harsh environment. You’ll make camp in the heart of the dunes and watch the sunset in complete peace while your guide prepares your dinner. If you wish, you may climb to a high dune to watch the sunset and take some amazing photographs. As darkness descends, you’ll experience the solitude & wonder of a land free from city noise or pollution. After dinner, you’ll be awestruck by the immensity and depth of the vast sky of the Sahara. If the weather is clear, you’ll see millions of stars and the Milky Way, unhindered by any city lights, and fall asleep to the soft sound of the desert breeze.

Day 2 :

MERZOUGA/ERG CHEBBI – CAMEL-TREKKING – LUNCH WITH BERBER NOMADS – DESERT CAMPING (BIG DUNES)

The next morning, you’ll have breakfast, prepared by your guide. You’ll then camel-trek for about 2 hours, coming out of the dunes on the east side of the Erg. You’ll camel-trek across the flat hamada to arrive at the desert home of a Berber nomad family. You’ll have tea with them & spend time learning about their life in the harsh desert. Don’t worry – your guide will translate! The nomad women will demonstrate some typical Berber handicrafts such as weaving & embroidery. Your nomad hosts will prepare a delicious lunch for you – a traditional Berber pizza, which is flat bread stuffed with ground meat, onions, and spices. If you wish, you can watch them prepare the meal. After lunch, you’ll camel-trek back into the dunes for 2-3 hours. Once again, you’ll be surrounded by sand and sky and the unique silence of the desert. You’ll spend a second night desert camping amid the big dunes, after enjoying a traditional Moroccan meal cooked for you by your guide.

Day 3 :

MERZOUGA/ERG CHEBBI – CAMEL-TREKKING OUT OF THE DUNES – LUNCH AT HOTEL

On the last of your 3 days in the Sahara, if you wish, your guide will wake you before sun-up. You’ll climb to a high dune to watch the sunrise over the dunes. It’s an utterly beautiful & spiritual experience – well worth waking up early for! After breakfast, you’ll start the final camel trek to exit the dunes. When you arrive back at the desert hotel, you’ll enjoy some refreshing tea. You’ll then have a chance to shower, change & relax in the comfort of the hotel.
